Eric Mandat

Shrouded Angels

Clarinet and electronics

An imagining of the intersection of our corporeal selves and the interdimensional beings constantly moving around and within us, present yet hidden.

For more than 40 years, clarinetist/composer Eric Mandat has been on the leading edge of  developments in multiphonic, microtonal, and timbral modulation possibilities for the clarinet. Through his explorations Eric has developed a deeply personal artistic expression as a performer and composer, and he is a leading authority on multiphonics.

Eric tours regularly as a concert soloist, performing his works throughout the world. He was a member of the Chicago Symphony’s MusicNOW ensemble for 15 seasons, and with the eclectic sextet Tone Road Ramblers for nearly 30 years. Eric continues to perform frequently in solo and small group improvisation contexts.

Eric’s solo compositions have become staples in the repertoire of adventurous clarinetists throughout the world. He has received numerous awards and honors for his innovative solo and chamber music works featuring clarinet. Eric also composes educational music for pre-college clarinetists, and he was commissioned by the Illinois Music Educators Association to compose the 2025 Illinois All-State junior- and senior-level audition etudes for both clarinet and bass clarinet.

Celebrating his 45th year at the Southern Illinois University School of Music, Eric serves as Visiting Professor of Clarinet and Distinguished Scholar. In 1999 he received the SIU Outstanding Scholar Award, the university’s highest honor for research/creative work.

Barry Moon and Doug Nottingham

pincushioned w/ Casey Farina

Pushing electronic music and live video in new directions, pinchushioned and Casey Farina explore territories between rhythm and chaos. As in dreams, where in a moment we feel something is recognizable, it immediately becomes strange, leading us to question its meaning. There is no need to wake up. One illusion is a fine substitute for another.

pincushioned has been performing since 2007, when Barry Moon and Doug Nottingham found some common ground in their listening tastes. These being limited to Autechre and King Crimson they quickly realized they’d need to be inventive. Beginning as a purely digital ensemble with the two of them jamming on all the Ableton gear and Moon improvising video, the duo has gone through many different phases. pincushioned toured extensively in the spring of 2014. They released their first album, Fragile, in 2000, and their second, Haikeus, in 2023.

For this iteration they are joined by Casey Farina, who in addition to being an accomplished musician, creates some of the most innovative video around. Blending techniques used in VJ presentation with gaming and visualization, Casey has carved out a niche in the video world.
