Digital Void

Conrad Kehn, voice and laptop

Lynn Baker, sax and laptop

Nicole Esquibel, video

Digital Void is a network music performance duo of Lynn Baker (saxophones, laptop) & Conrad Kehn (voice, laptop). Digital Void constructs extemporaneous compositions in a telemetric environment. This results in a sometimes complex and surprising blending of elements the sum of which greatly exceeds its parts. This duo draws more from a common palette of urban groove samples, chant traditions, and contemporary producer aesthetics to produce an ever-evolving tribute to contemporary improvisation. Although Digital Void has a history of in-person performance, the current iteration is purely remote. Past performances include the 2020 & 2022 NowNet Arts Conference hosted by the Center for Computer Research in Music and Acoustics (CCRMA), Stanford University, and the 8th Annual Oh My Ears Festival.

Digital Void was created out of the necessity of social distancing during Covid. Although we have performed together in person numerous times, we have never performed this material, as this duo while in the same room. This would be a first for us..a Moxsonic premiere!

The title ‘Copyright of Spring’ represents a set of Stravinsky and other 20th century composer samples used during this set. Predator/ Pray is based on a sample set up animal sounds and sacred chant. Everything is improvised. Each player develops and manipulates their own material, while also ‘stealing’ samples from each other and manipulating those in real time.

Conrad Kehn is a performer, composer, improviser, educator, writer and artist. He is the founding Director of The Playground; a chamber ensemble dedicated to modern music. An award winning composer, Conrad’s style spans all genres touching on electro-acoustic music, multimedia works, graphic scores, aleatory, and experimental rock. Conrad is a lecturer of Music Technology at the University of Denver’s Lamont School of Music.

Lynn Baker is an active saxophone performer and clinician, performing with the telematic duo Digital Void, his own Lynn Baker Quartet, and several other ensembles.  He is a Conn-Selmer Artist Clinician and has made appearances at colleges, universities, high schools, and festivals, which have taken him across North America, Europe, and to Asia.  He is an Origin Records recording artist with Azure Intention released in 2010 and LectroCoustic in 2013.
